GOVERNMENT WASTE
AWARENESS RIDE !!

Citylink Tunnels, Friday 18th July 2003 from 4:00pm

Why?

The Bracks Labor Government is wasting road safety money

  • Victorian Government is spending $14 million to introduce Motorcycle/Scooter Front Number Plates for a financial return of less than $300,000.

  • Only 3.1% of rider speed camera photo's are taken from the front. 2.8% of driver speed camera photo's evade prosecution because their front number plates aren't identified. A difference of 0.3%. This 0.3% equates to 316 riders. The Victorian Government is spending $14 million of public money to allow speed camera's to catch 316 riders – why don't they just turn the camera's around?

  • Victorian Government expects riders to pay $100 for the introduction of Front Number Plates, per bike.

  • Why is money being spent on a Front Number Plate Trial – Much more benefit, and saved lives, will be reaped from spending in other motorcycle/scooter safety areas on the advice of riders.

  • Motorcyclists pay an annual $50 registration/road Safety Levy, $5 million to be collected, but in almost 12 months nothing has been spent – despite Motorcycle/Scooter Fatalities halved since 2002.

  • Victorian Government wants to spend Motorcycle/Scooter $50 Safety Levy Money on road repairs. Why isn’t this money coming from normal road maintenance sources? Motorcycle and Scooter riders shouldn’t be required to foot this bill.

What Route will the Awareness Ride Take?

MRAA Says "The official route is a single pass through each of the tunnels at the speed limit." What riders choose to do at the conclusion of the official route is up to them.
