NetWriter - Issue 5
--------------- Well it's been a long time "between drinks" but Net-Writer issue 5 is finally here! A lot of things have heppened since the last newsletter - the most memorable of which (well for us at netrider.net.au anyhow) being the hacking of our ISP. As a result the netrider.net.au website was offline for quite some time - however we had already begun a site redesign and decided that all the time involved with getting the old site back up and running would be better off spent on developing the new website. So during April 2003 we launched the new website - for more information read on below. ------------------------------------- :: New Website for netrider.net.au :: ------------------------------------- As mentioned above, our new (and improved) website is now online. While there are still a couple of features from the old site we are yet to migrate across, the bulk of it (and lots of exciting new features) are now online. One of the biggest changes is the introduction of a forums area - a place where you can share your thoughts on all things motorcycling, and we've also incorporated the classifieds into it! Instead of try and describe the whole site to you, we'd rather let you experience it first hand so go on, take a look at http://www.netrider.net.au and let us know your thoughts. ---------------------- :: Icicle Ride 2003 :: ---------------------- This years BMW Club of Victoria Icicle ride is nearly upon us again! It seems like it was just yesterday that netrider.net.au claimed the best attendance trophy in our first year of involvement. Now we just have to retain it. This years ride is starting on Midnight, Saturday July 12th and runs until dawn, Sunday July 13th. The main starting point is at the BP Service Station, Somerton (cnr Hume Hwy & Cooper St Melways Ref 180 F9). Entry price is $20 per rider, $15 per pillion and includes badge, soup stop and a cooked breakfast. Netrider.net.au will also have a meeting point for eastern suburbs riders at Nunawading McDonalds (cnr Springvale Rd & Maroondah Hwy) for an 11pm leave time to meet up with others at the main starting point. Last years ride was a lot of fun (although rather wet!)... so c'mon, show your support and help us retain the trophy for best attended club! An entry form can be downloaded from http://www.bmwmccvic.net.au/downloads/pdf/icicle_ride_03.pdf or for more details please contact netrider@netrider.net.au with your queries. ------------ :: Events :: ------------ Many members have been asking us why we haven't been organizing many events lately. We're looking into our liabilities when it comes to organizing events and what is/may be required as far as insurance is concerned. However - please keep an eye on our events calendar as many of our members and other clubs are constantly organizing rides and events which can be found on here. ------------------------- :: Partners & Sponsors :: ------------------------- netrider.net.au partners are businesses that offer you, our members, discounts on products &/or services. Please support them. These are generally smaller establishments that would benefit from your custom. Full details of the current partners can be found on the website at: http://www.netrider.net.au ----------------- :: Advertising :: ----------------- Don't run away just yet - we're not putting advertising in your newsletter... what we are looking for is people who may be interested in banner advertising on the netrider.net.au website. The banners can be seen on all pages (except in the forum area) and the space is available for only $30/month. Discounts are available for purchases of at least six months advertising. For more details visit http://www.netrider.net.au or email netrider@netrider.net.au -------------------- :: The Rear Wheel :: -------------------- This could well be a new(ish) urban legend.... "In retrospect, lighting the match was my mistake. But I was only trying to retrieve my son's rat." David Morgan told doctors in the severe burns unit of San Francisco City Hospital. Admitted for emergency treatment after an attempt to retrieve the rat had gone seriously wrong, he explained, "My son left the cage door open, so his rat, Vermin, escaped into the garage. As usual, it looked for a good place to hide, and ran up the exhaust pipe of my Yamaha R1 motorcycle. I tried to retrieve Vermin by offering him food attached to a string, but he wouldn't come out again, so I peered into the pipe and struck a match, thinking the light might attract him." At a hushed press conference, a hospital spokesman described what had happened next. "The flame ignited a pocket of residual gas and a flame shot out the pipe igniting Mr. Morgan's mustache and severely burned his face. It also set fire to the pet rat's fur and whiskers which, in turn, ignited a larger pocket of gas further up the exhaust pipe which propelled the rodent out like a cannonball." Morgan suffered second- degree burns, and a broken nose from the impact of the pet rat. His son was grounded for 6 weeks. -- netrider@netrider.net.au netrider.net.au - connecting riders
